We start our tree tour with this lovely “Beach Tree” interpretation shared with us by Inexplicable Device after he’d switched back from Selkie form.
Not knowing whether I was going to be a stickler for pictures of literal trees only, he also provided us with this dizzying gaze up into some kind of old pine tree. The image reminds me that some tree species can develop such thick lateral branches as to develop their own microecosystems on a single branch! I read about this phenomenon years ago in a National Geographic magazine. I will do further research in an effort to provide a proper post about it, because I think it is a fascinating topic.

Exercise: A study in patience
I’m going to pick a tree and take a picture of it during each season. If I take the first picture this week for Fall, by this time next year I’ll have a seasonal progression of the tree. If you like this idea, feel free to do it as well. You can share your tree’s seasonal progression here or post it on your own blog and send me an email, so I know to look for it and reblog.

I love Mr Devine’s sand interpretation of a Beech tree – showing that it pays to keep your eyes open!

All the trees are so magnificent – and so different! I’m fascinated by that Banyan tree with its ariel roots/accessory trunks, and the beautiful speckled bark of the sycamore (which puts the horrid old sycamores around here to shame).

I love banyan trees! I have seen them for myself when visiting Mary in Florida. I like how the sycamore trunk looks like a collage of old paint chips. I have not seen one in person though.

I really enjoyed the Beach Tree. That was really creative and amazingly observant. Such a good photo. I can’t believe I totally missed submitting something! I spent all morning looking at trees that beavers had chewed on and didn’t take a single picture. I’ll catch next one!

I like how so many photographed up into the trees. I took pictures of one tree over quite a long period of time and put it together in a composite. I’ll see if I can find it and send it to you. (K)

Aw Melanie, I’m so sorry I missed this one. September was a pretty chaotic month for me – all of my own doing! I’ve enjoyed looking at everyone else’s pictures though. I’ll try to do better in future. 🙂
